Hello, I would like some advice on clearing up an anal gland infection. A few weeks ago I notice some drops of blood from her glands. I expressed them and straight dark red blood with some small clots came out. I took her to the vet. They prescribed a 2 week course of baytril/enrofloxan. After the 2 weeks she still has blood in her glands. She has no other symptoms, no inflammation, redness, swelling. They don’t seem to bother her. I would like to try herbs before I take her back to vet. Her history: she will be 6 in October, she weighs 60lbs., she used to have food(beef?) allergies that manifested with itchy on her belly and underarms that developed into scabs and leaky anal glands and greasy ears. It has been about 3 years since she has had any of these problems. But her glands have always gotten full and need to be expressed about once a month. She takes trifexis once a month, I live in s.florida where fleas and heartworm are issues. For about a week I started to add yogurt, flax seeds(ground), canned pumpkin, oatmeal, plus one capsule each of goldenseal root, licorice, echanicea to her food twice a day. I started to do a compress of epsom salts dissolved in a strong brew of dandelion leaf, mullein, comfrey and yarrow. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Paula

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things herbally.

Some dogs just need them expressed on a regular basis. Occasionally they have to come out.

Unfortunately, “all-natural” solutions sometimes aren’t enough on breeds that are no longer “all natural“. Anal glands worked really well when they were still wolves.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
