So I have a dog that was diagnosed with pannus or chronic superficial keratitis a few months ago, my local vet ( who is skeptical about herbs) prescribed Dexamethasone drops daily or as needed. I was hesitant about going with a conventional drug but figured we would give it a shot, to begin with there was a noticeable difference in the dogs comfort level and decrease in redness/ irritation in his eyes. The problem is that if I have him outside at all he needs the drops but as with most drugs I am seeing side effects that Id rather not have. So its either drug effects or the threat of loss of sight. I also realize that the drops don’t “fix” anything they just keep it from getting worse. As it is an auto immune disease I’m not sure exactly what can be done to either replace the drops or deal with what ever imbalance in his body has created this issue but am very willing to try! He is a neutered 6 year old border collie blue heeler cross that has been fairly healthy and is very active. I have tried to keep him on a high quality diet and do minimum vaccs and chems for parasites. As we live in the boonies (challis Idaho) my options for holistic treatment are scarce but would love to hear if you have ever treated any of these cases or have any suggestions for me to try. Thanks so much!!
Pannus is pretty serious stuff and not particularly responsive to any herbal therapies I’ve tried or heard of. In this case, I think the drops will be best. Topical dexamethasone has pretty minimal side effects and will post-pone the blindness better than herbs.
