I am researching Astragalus canadensis as a possible substitute in a poultry health formula that decocts astragalus along with other herbs, using boiling water. The root was used in various ways by aboriginal communities. Of course, all these varieties of Astragalus come with a toxic warning. Is there any way to know what medicinal properties or might hold? Wildcrafting would be a whole lot cheaper than buying from the (somewhat) local herbalist when treating a large flock.
I know another lady who wants to know about other astragalus in her area as well. She is very knowledgable, but stumped when it comes to which ones she can wildcraft for use.
