Hi, my pit/lab mix has developed an aural hematoma. She is extremely fearful of visits to the vet so I am reluctant to visit the vet to have the hematoma drained. I have been applying arnica infused oil. Any other herbal remedies you can recommend or is drainage and or surgery the only alternative? Thanks.

Plantain is the first thing that comes to mind.

Drainage is the only option I know of.

I made a mixture of powdered plantain mixed with a tincture made from an herb called self heal. I added some bentonite clay to this just to keep it on the ear better. Used that for a couple of weeks alternated with arnica oil directly to the ear flap. That did seem to help a little. I have since found something called a no-flap ear wrap that keeps her ears from flapping around. I am keeping that on her head most of the day and putting some arnica tincture on the ear a few times a day. I am definitely seeing improvement now. The swelling is going down and she does not seem to be in any pain.
Not sure which “remedy” worked, maybe it was a combination or maybe it was just time doing the healing, but whatever it is, it does seem to be getting better.

The body will absorb the fluid over time but there will likely still be a lot of thickening still. Draining makes prettier ears. I’d love to be wrong though. If her ear turns out to be the same as the other one, let us know.

I will keep you updated on final results. I really don’t care how her ear looks. If it ends up looking a little funky it will just give her character. I’m sure she only wants to be scratched behind the ears so she doesn’t care how it looks.
