I just took my dog to the vet after a fun day at the beach where he got some nasty cuts on his paws. We also noticed that he had some older looking fissures as well. I am wondering if they could be from the roads being salted through the winter. We are soaking his paws in a hibitaine solution 2x/day and the vet suggested that I use vaseline on his paws as a moisturizer. I have some calendula, yarrow and plantain salve that I would prefer to use. Listening to a conversation with Dr. Jones and John Gallagher on herbmentor.com, it sounds like you have used all 3 herbs on dogs before, but when I googled yarrow and dogs, all sorts of sites list it as toxic for dogs. I am sure he’s going to be licking it off his feet so just want to double check before I use it.. Thanks!

Many things that are listed as toxic are because they are toxic INTERNALLY. Arnica is a good example. I agree with you though. I do not consider petroleum jelly a moisturizer. It is a protectant. Coconut oil, shea butter and other plant based fats would be moisturizers.

I’ve been using yarrow internally in dogs for close to twenty years. Usually in dogs that were looking for an excuse to die due to blood loss and massive trauma. I’ve never seen a single case of toxicity. Dose properly and you won’t have issues.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
