Hey Doc,
Are other berberis plants, besides Berberis vulgaris, medicinal?
Is Berberis thunbergii medicinal in the same way as oregon grape?
And are the berries of Berberis good and/or medicinal.

Berberis thunbergii is Japanese barberry. It has berberine and some other constituents similar to B. vulgaris but hasnt been used or studied nearly as much so we don’t know as much about its safety. I’d stick with barberry or Oregon grape.
The berries of Oregon grape or barberry are edible. They can be quite bitter if the plant isn’t getting lots of water. The American Indians used to use them topically for wounds (the leaves too). The berries make a good digestive bitter too.

I have tried to find the “search” feature but been unsuccessful. Sometimes I miss the obvious. Could someone help me out here? Where exactly is “search”? It moved since I last used it.

Hover over the spot in the upper right hand corner of the school where it says “Hello Annett”. It’l drop down the menu with the search stuff on it.
