StudentStory is in the southern US, beautyberry leaf, callicarpa americana/japonica, would be placed under the harness of a horse or mule. As the harness agitation broke down the leaf, it released insect repellent oils. Apparently this story lead to research regarding callicarpenal, isolated from the leaves of beautyberry. As I read the research, it claims significant activity against mosquitos, fire ants, and two species of ticks- as in better that 95% effective.
Any insight, information, or experience in determining if these studies are sound? Thanks!

Homestead InstructorI’ve never heard of it. Lot of the mint family plants are good for keeping mosquitoes off. I just grab a handful of leaves when I’m in the garden and rub them on my arms and face so I don’t smell like a mammal. :0)

StudentHi Dee I have used beauty berry for insects and yes the mosquitoes and bugs don’t like it. Since it grows wild everywhere around me if I’m outside being bothered by those pesky things I take some leave and rub them in my hands to get the plant sap going and just rub them on my skin. I also have shoved some of those leaves down the fire ant holes with a stick they didn’t really appreciate it 😂 beauty berry also makes a delicious jelly which I make once a year when the berries develop. It doesn’t have any natural pectin in it so it’s a little tricky to get to set. If your interested I found a good solution that has worked for me every time.
