StudentI have seen several posts on social media claiming that Berberine aids in weight loss. I am curious if anyone has used it and what their thoughts might be on the topic. Also, what is the science behind it if it does have a positive effect?

StudentHi Rene, I have been getting a lot of Berberine info … I had the supplements for boosting the immune system but quit taking it after half a bottle. Now, ads are running on tv and articles in my supplement magazine talking about new studies that show Berberine helps to improve insulin sensitivity thereby curbing insulin resistance which is reason behind excess belly fat. It is described as working on the cells use of glucose so that it actually curbs your hunger because the cells have the energy that they need. That is a layman’s summation of one or two of the mechanisms behind Berberine and weight loss. You can do a search and find lots of articles on it from Mayo Clinic to Cleveland Clinic and so much more. There are nice studies on its efficacy on acne too and helping leaky gut … so lots of things to study there 🙂 I hope you find this helpful. I’m planning to continue using it for insulin resistance and my daughter will try it for acne.

Dawn is Correct.
I don’t love it for long-term use. Be sure to take a break every week or two.
Barberry and Oregon grape are both good sources.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentI realize this thread is rather old, so I hope this will still be seen. I was looking for a thread already active to ask about taking berberine for low insulin levels. My doctor prescribed it but did not mention ever taking a break. How long of a break would you advise every week or two, Doc? I’m not sure if I should do a week on/week off or 2-3 days break every 2 weeks. I’d appreciate a recommendation. 🙂

Take a day or two off every couple of weeks.
