StudentHello! I get dry, cracked hands as the weather gets cold and I would love to find the best herbs to make into a good healing salve. I have heard calendula is great, but are there some others I should look into or add to a calendula salve? Thank you!

StudentI use plantain. Might you consider increasing your fluid intake. Hot teas are great in the winter. I would also question if my thyroid was working properly, but that might be because I am having difficulty with mine and it is on my mind a lot.

Studentmy daughter has the same thing, lotions don’t really touch it. Do you make your own calendula salve? Do you have a favorite recipe?

StudentTopic AuthorHello! Dry winter skin is the worst! I don’t make my own calendula salve yet but I’m hoping to try soon…I’m excited to learn about different herbs in this course that might combine well to make a great recipe for skin cream/salve! What about you? Do you make your own or have a favorite recipe?

Homestead InstructorMarshmallow, comfrey and calendula equal parts makes a great lotion. Good for everything from dry hands to really bad diaper rash. My two year old grandson who was experiencing some diaper rash issues, came walking into the room and announced “Mom, I need some of Opa’s bum sauce. Opa makes really good sauce for my bum!”
I show you how to make it in the Herbal Medicine making lesson on salves adn lotions.
Or, the easy button is here: Essential Lotion Experience Kit
We called it Save Yer Skin. We’re still doing focus groups to decide if we should change the name to Opa’s Bum Sauce. LOL

StudentDoc, you mentioned above marshmallow, comfrey and calendula equal parts – but the video shows an additional ingredient (chamomile). Which is the more current version of the lotion? That lotion looks totally dreamy. I was wondering, I have some comfrey oil I made almost a year ago and the herbs are still in it, so if I used that as the oil, then made a nice strong tea with the other ingredients (equal parts), would it be as good as the video method? Thanks

Homestead InstructorI often throw in some chamomile or chickweed. Both are nice additions for itchy things.

Studentwould this help with Eczema on feet? My grandaughter suffers from (Dyshidrotic eczema) they think on her feet. They are always sweaty, they have little blisters on toe, and an odor to them. Anything I can make her to use? I am willing to try anything. I have her wearing white socks only at this point. She is 15 years old.

Homestead InstructorThe lotion would likely help a lot.
I would also consider these:
Brigham tea as there are often allergy connections to this
Burdock & Milk Thistle because eczema is almost always connected to liver grumpiness.

StudentI made Doc’s healing lotion again two days ago with plantain, calendula, chamomile, comfrey, marshmallow root and chickweed for a friend’s husband who has severe eczema and thanks to the lotion he was finally able to sleep. Plus it healed a biopsy site and another allergic reaction spot under his watch, in a day! I have especially succeeded into converting the couple into herbal enthusiasts !!!

StudentI have made a beef tallow balm that is incredible for skin issues! My hands would crack and bleed every winter from drying out so bad and this gets them back healthy within a day. It also has cleared up eczema in my friend and his daughter, so I really recommend it
