StudentJust read through the 3 nervous system classes. Lot of interesting stuff there but didn’t find what I was looking for. I dealt with a major headache all day yesterday that followed a series of numbness in my fingers, left hand. It moved around from little finger and ring finger, that cleared and pointer finger and thumb went numb. It went back and forth several times and lasted for couple hours and then became a headache. I’ve been diagnosed with A-typical migraine, Migraine syndrome and migraine equivalent. I don’t have headaches of any kind too frequently. It took 800 mg ibuprophen to settle it down for an hour so I could get some sleep. Any strain brought it right back, from a cough, to bending down to pick up my flashlight. Turning over or getting up. That lasted from 5:45 A.M.yesterday til 5:30A.M this morning. I’m being really careful today not to get it going again.
What I was looking for was what part of the brain was responsible and what I could do to prevent it? in the future What causes a blood vessel to constrict? What part/function of the brain is most effected by crowded space What causes numbness? I’m planning to grow Ashwaganda this year. Drs have told me that migraine I have is caused by a constricted blood vessel which would cause me to expect if this was a migraine the pain would be in one area of my head. I also have an Arnold Chiari malformation of the brain with a syrinx which means there isn’t enough space in my skull for my brain so it pushes into my neck and causes problems for my spinal cord. I had decompression sugery 20 years ago Past experience is that pain in the lower part of the back of my skull is Chiari related. This headache included pain only on the right side of my head except for the lower back of my head and included everything from my temple, the bone at the top of my nose, , the bone area where my eyebrow grows and below it, behind and above my ear and well up into my hairline and down into the right side of the upper part of the back of my neck. One conclusion that I’ve drawn over the years is that any inflammation in my brain will make the matter worse. Last time I had a problem I experimented with eating cucumbers – they are supposed to be anti-inflammatory and had great success after 3 days of eating 1 `/2 cukes with lunch. Pain stopped for a couple hours while I was eating cukes the first day, stopped for 5 hours the second day. The 3rd day it stopped and didn’t come back. I started with 4 smaller cukes this time but didn’t seem to help. Will try again I used peppermint/eucalyptus for it’s anti-inflammatory properties – it stopped numbness in 2 fingers but then it moved to fingers on the other side of same hand – back and forth each time I used it. In the past it has taken care of a migraine headache almost instantly. This time rubbing on the lotion cause more pain. Numbness in fingers is returning – Any info would be appreciated.
Follow-up: Pain & numbness issues continued for 5 days. I read a conversation on inflammation and Doc’s response to check out the Case Study class. Did so and it got my brain working. Looked at what I had been eating. I don’t eat too much that is inflammatory and a fair amount of stuff that is anti-inflammatory and the cukes didn’t help this time. But I had been eating a lot of cheddar cheese and came to the conclusion since sodium in the cheese contributes to some inflammation that I would eliminate cheese to see if it made a difference. I had 1 more headache and then no more. Almost 4 days pain free.
I would love to better understand what things are working together to bring this on so I can prevent it. Any thoughts or explanations of how the numbness is working? I will check out the pain class but my biggest concern is controlling the inflammation that is causing space issues for my brain. I’ve had 9 MRI’s & have found that a lot of drs don’t have much knowledge of or experience with Chiari. It took me 17 1/2 yrs to get a diagnosis. So I’ve had to depend on my own research & experience. Thanks for any thoughts!

StudentYour description sounds familiar. Have you had your hormones checked? Best to do a a saliva or urine test. If you didn’t want to have the tests done, you could add a little sage, black cohash or red clover, and see how the next 2-3 months go. Hope you find the problem. H/A can be no fun.

Homestead InstructorDiet has more to do with inflammation than anything else but herbs can help too. The joint support formula has a lot of good anti-inflammatory herbs in it. I’d particularly look at turmeric, Boswellia and fresh-ground black pepper together. Gingko is a vasodilator and improves circulation, particularly in the brain.
On another note, the Rezzimax Tuner has some remarkable applications for pain, neuralgia etc…

StudentTopic AuthorI’ve seen a drink recipe for milk, turmeric, honey and black pepper that sounds like an interesting way to consume some of those. Could Boswellia Essential oil be added to that?  I have these: Turmeric, Burdock, Ginger but don’t have these parts: Devil’s Claw, Yucca & Black Cohosh of the joint support formula. Would the others work on their own?
Hoping to work with ginseng and ashwaganda for other brain help
We are currently using a recipe for joint support that has pumpkin seed, sesame seed, flax seed, raisins, honey and gelatin – do any of these have similar effects?   I am trying to work out a diet that helps minimize inflammation, reduces my blood sugar levels & cholesterol & also helps 2 plugged lymph nodes above my ankle. I am using the Immunity support and the Lymphatic support as you suggested but not as consistently as should be. Cayenne pepper and I don’t get along too well and there is a limit as to how much applesauce I can consume without increasing my blood sugar levels.  I am currently using apple cider vinegar and seeing some results.

Homestead InstructorI’d skip the honey. Sugar+high insulin=high inflammation
Turmeric, ginger and burdock would be pretty good with some fresh-ground black pepper. The whole package would be better.
Memory and alertness formula is good for lots of brain stuff. Look at those herbs.

StudentTopic AuthorThat’s one of the problems I run into a lot. something might be good for one thing but it doesn’t go well with others. Any ideas for a way I can mix the lymphatic support so it doesn’t burn my throat going down? It takes a lot of applesauce to get 2 tsp down.

StudentWhen I take herbs that burn going down, I prefer to make pills out of the herbs. I make the pills long like a caplet and 3 equals approx. one tsp. They go down much better that way and I make sure I drink plenty water with them. You could also put the herbs (dry or tincture) into capsules, I’ve done this also. If its a tincture, just fill and take immediately so it doesn’t dissolve. Its worked for me. Good luck on your health journey.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you for responding, I thought it was important with Cayenne not to use it in capsule form because it wouldn’t get into your system early enough to do what it is supposed to do. Would that also apply to a pill?

Homestead InstructorEncapsulation will diminish some of cayenne’s activity to the lymphatic system.
