Do you know if it is possible to grow Brigham Tea in northern Utah? It is really hard to find for purchase. I did find some powder and it literally has changed my life. I was dealing with bronchial asthma. And since I started taking it I have been asthma free. I would love to grow my own but I’m not sure it will survive here. If you think it might grow, any idea where to get it? –thanks so much or providing a place to ask these questions.

Homestead InstructorI can’t imagine you’d have trouble growing it. Certainly worth a try. It’s hardy all the way to zone 4.
It likes dry, sandy soil.
These guys have the seed. Either E. viridis or E. nevadensis should work fine. They also have some Chinese Ephedra (Ma Huang) which I’ve never used.

The other option would be to make some tincture for long-term storage. I (or lots of other people) can sell you some if you don’t want to make it yourself but it’s easy to do.
Get some dried plant material
weigh it and put it into a mason jar
add 3-5 ml vodka for every gram of plant
put it in a dark cupboard
shake it and say nice things to it every day
In a few weeks, strain it and store in a dark place
Or, if you’re lazy, just get some fresh plant material, poke it in a jar and just cover it with the booze. This process makes less consistent strengths of tinctures but works fine. You just have to do more experienting to figure out what your dose shoud be from batch to batch.

I’m in Box Elder County so it may or may not grow but I will give it a try. Thanks for the link!

It made it through the Winter in our hoop house but has struggled this Summer. I am guessing the soil is not correct as it is closer to potting soil than sand. I need to fix that.
Yeah, what’re ya thinkin’ man. Quit being nice to that stuff. Next you’ll be telling us you watered it too. LOL

I finally got my BT plant in some media more appropriate to its needs. My first attempt was WAY to heavy. There was way too much find sand that plugged the drainage. I think my second attempt will be better. I screened it over a #10 screen and got nearly all of the fine stuff out of the mix. Now to figure out the proper watering schedule. Anyone in Southern UT want to tell me whenever it rains down there?
I will probably keep after a more frequent schedule and taper off as the plant shows signs of growth.

TIncture doses usually start from 10-30 drops. I usually go on the heavy side for Brigham tea.
By the way, I’ve done some further reading on the Brigham tea cultivation. It grows really slowly. Don’t count on the plants in your yrd being able to keep up with your needs. Also, be mindful when harvesting that anything you take will take years to grow back so don’t go to heavy on any given bush.
