My 76 year old mother fell Friday. She finally went to the ER and is still there. The diagnosis is several broken ribs. She’s on LOTS of meds on a daily basis plus the pain meds they’ve added. I’ve done a quick search on the search feature and can’t find what I’m looking for. I’m fairly new to the course and don’t have lots of things at my disposal. I do have some comfrey powder. What can I make quickly and easily to give her to help with pain and help her ribs heal quicker?

So I’m pretty timid on giving people herbs internally when they are on different medications. However, things topically should be just fine. You could do a comfrey poultice or tincture spray to help speed up the healing, and perhaps a hops tincture spray to help with the pain. Those are two things that have really helped me in the past with healing and pain

Greg, thank you. I’m aware of not doing things internally. But I also don’t have time to make a tincture. The weeks it needs to sit is too long. I haven’t made anything myself with herbs, only easy made products. I as hoping to have someone easily explain what I could do quickly with the dried comfrey.

Comfrey tincture topically is the easy button, but teas or poultices of comfrey are just as effective topically. I’ve put a wash cloth on broken bones or wound and had the person soak it with comfrey tea and let it sit for awhile while they sit watching TV and such.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

When this happened I really didn’t know much about how to make things. I had some comfrey powder from Mountain rose and just mixed it with water in a spray bottle. Didn’t work well! It just clumped. So we just dumped some of the mixture on our hands and rubbed it onto her ribs. The goal was as many times a day as could be done which ended up being maybe 1-2. BUT she was sleeping on those ribs within 3 days! So even though it was probably an old bag of dried herbs, it wasn’t in alcohol, it didn’t set for weeks, we had amazing results!

Yay!! You did the right thing!! I use Comfrey Root Salve for so many things…especially my knee and my hip and so have been able to avoid joint repelecement surgery. All of my younger siblings already have had some sort of joint replacement surgery. I feel so fortunate to have discovered Comfrey!!
