July 4th festivities are soon to come…I’m wondering if some calming herbs for chickens would be okay to give them with their last meal of the day. I’m thinking I will give my chickens just chamomile, but I’m wondering about catnip since I have so much of it in my yard. There are other herbs that others may be growing that could help chickens stay calm and sleep peacefully (for those who live in places where this might be an issue).

Do these herbs have the same effect on chickens as on humans? Should I be worried about too much causing them to fall off their perch? Which might be the best choice in this situation?

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) = hypnotic, nervine relaxant, antispasmodic
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) = nervine relaxant, sedative, analgesic, antispasmodic
California Poppy (Eschsholzia californica) = nervine relaxant, mild analgesic, sedative
Hyssop (hyssopus officinales) = nervine relaxant, antispasmodic
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) = hypnotic, nervine relaxant, antispasmodic, antidepressant
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) = nervine, hyypnotic, antispasmodic, anodyne, hypotensive
St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) = nervine relaxant AND nervine tonic
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) = nervine relaxant, hypnotic, antispasmodic, hypotensive

        Thanks!

chamomile and catnip are both good choices. :0)
