I’ve been trying to figure out what this shrub/tree is for a few years. It started growing from underneath the fence about 7 or 8 years ago because it knew my weakness for not being able to kill anything that’s green and growing….sigh . (I’m working on it though). But I really love this guy! We have a special connection, don’t know why but I’ve loved it ever since it first popped it’s little self up out of the ground! (Ok… stop right here for a minute. I KNOW I sound strange… even to myself! This is the only place I feel semi comfortable saying such things! But I have SO MANY questions and such an intense need to know that I’m willing to run the risk of exposing my crazy, uncontrollable affection for everything that grows. And I mean EVERYTHING…. [emoji7] ok I’m gonna stop there….) So… I love this little guy so much (not so little anymore. 10 ft tall!) and I don’t even know it’s name! Do you know? If not how do I find out? I’ve spent hours online searching, asking friends, posting pics on fb, all with no luck!

The leaves have an amazing sweet, spicy smell, maybe kinda like….. apple cider …or not. Idk.. I can’t quite place it. But it smells good! It’s kinda scraggly not real thick and full. It’s kinda hard to see in a wide photo shot because of all the vines growing on the fence behind it. Here are some current pics and some from last fall Please tell me you know what it is!! And please don’t even bother telling me it’s an invasive weed! I won’t believe you! Thank you so much for always being patient with my endless questions! I appreciate it more than you know!![emoji2]

It is scraggly because it is in shade. It is trying to find the SUN!!!!!!

I don’t like to recommend google for much but it does have an image search feature. Not great but it might help.

What about your neighbor? if it came from THEIR SIDE (all THEIR fault you know  ) maybe they know.

[emoji106] OK I’ll try Google although I’ve spent hours on there already but I’ve never searched by uploading an image. Didn’t know you could do that Pretty cool! I did ask the neighbor. She had no idea. I was hoping someone on here would easily be able to solve my mystery! Guess that would’ve been too easy! ….. The search will go on! [emoji263]

                  Is it a walnut?

By George! I think he’s got it!!! Mystery solved! Thank you Steven You’re awesome!! But now I’m really sad. Apparently English Walnut trees get big, really BIG! If I let it keep growing it’ll probably take out the fence! If the fence belonged to only me I’d totally get rid of it and choose the tree! …..sigh… the thought of cutting it down breaks my heart [emoji26] …….

But seriously, THANK YOU so much for helping me identify it. I really appreciate the time you took to check for me! [emoji106]

If you are so attracted to that tree, plant the same kind, or transplant this one, where it gets some sun and has room to grow. Also your body might be craving walnuts, which help the brain. You might want to stock up on walnuts. 🙂

Yes, we made that discovery earlier in the thread. There are links for your own confirmation.
