StudentI received a disturbing phone call from a friend this morning. She really wants her Rhodesian Ridgeback to die peacefully, naturally at home. The dog is a rack of bones, bleeding from orifices, etc. This has been going on for months. My friend has sought out natural remedies. Someone has been advising her to overdose her dog on melatonin, on morphine, etc. She’s been trying these thinking the dog will be sedated and not in so much pain.
I have vocalized my thoughts to my friend about mercifully bringing her dog to the vet to experience one pin prick then go to sleep vs experimenting with all these overdoses. She’s resistant to my suggestion. SO, is there something she can give her dog to put her to sleep at home that’s effective and rapid?

StudentHi Joanne. I’m sorry to hear all that’s going on in that situation. Being disturbed by it is completely understandable, IMO.
Has your friend talked to the Veterinarian about having the dog euthanized at home?
There’s a mobile Vet in my area that makes home visits for veterinary care, and that includes euthanasia when the time comes.
In the time that has past since you posted this, I hope your friend decided to take your advice and the dog is no longer suffering.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you Geneva,
I did suggest home euthanasia too, as I know of a very compassionate one in the area, which she declined likely because of the expense. I’m not against handling it naturally, providing one is efficient w/treatment. Natural is always my preference, thus being an enthusiastic student here! But, as Doc Jones says, we’re not currently in the “apocalypse”. So experimenting with all these death cocktails for months, ineffectively, seemed more like a prolonged torture protocol. The dog was SO sick. My heart just emptied for this poor pup. My friend finally lost a cat recently which endured this same process.
***update***My friend finally brought the dog to the vet and they came out to the car to euthanize her. It would still be handy to know if there is a rapid, effective & painless natural formula for such a situation. (She still has another dog & cats. I have no doubt she will go through this same procedure when it’s nearing their time…)
