StudentI’m curious if there are any known benefits to using castor oil as the main carrier oil over other oils when applying herbs topically.

StudentHello Tina, I’ve recently heard about Castor Oil wraps or compresses and, also, that it helps treat abnormal skin cells (cancer?) … I have not done any research of my own on this one so I am following this thread to see what is posted. Thanks for inquiring 🙂

StudentHi Tina,
I just purchased some Castor Oil, and I am waiting for the packs to arrive. I read a lot of reviews and it seems that the oil is good for a lot of issues that people have had.

StudentCastor oil is thick and viscous making it extremely challenging to strain out any herbs if it’s a main carrier oil. It holds the herbs in suspension like jello. I’ve made topical formulas adding castor oil AFTER straining the herbs from a main carrier oil. The intention was for a deeply penetrating product addressing athletic injuries. Adding essential oils would be easy, yet castor oil’s main reputation is as a simple. I haven’t experienced it other than having to drink some in a milkshake to kick start labor. That was (ugh) memorable.

StudentBarbara O’Neill has some YouTube videos on how to use Castor Oil. She doesn’t add any herbs to it that I have seen.

StudentI made my first batches of lotion using olive oil, with dried herbs. (At least I thought they were dried, and then the tea with fresh herbs, all strained. )It lasted maybe a month, even in the fridge, and bubbled out like a a yeast dough. Last year I used caster oil, same herbs for skin, and in the fridge it lasted over a year (1 pint) with it being used every day. No bubbling over. My daughter is a nurse, and always having to wash hands or use hand sanitizer, which is rough on hands. I don’t know about the medicinal value, but I think it’s more likely real castor oil. Olive oil – the real stuff, is hard to come by, and expensive.
