I’m finding conflicting information regarding Catmint.  Does Catmint have the same medicinal benefits as Catnip?  Can they be used interchangeably?

I know you likely are asking Doc, but my research has shown them to be different enough that I am giving away my cat mint – since I meant to plant catnip, and the person I got the plants from did as so many do and tangled them all up together with names and properties.  So I am taking them out, and planting peppermint  and skullcap instead since they have such great properties.  Hopefully Doc can weigh in on this, but I hope this helps you a little (and I hope that my research was correct)!

Catmint is a common name for several Nepeta species. Catnip is Nepeta cataria. There are several other species that are often called catmint. Some of them have very similar properties to Nepeta cataria. Some don’t. If you want to know what you’re getting and have predictable results, use the Nepeta cataria.

I planted lemon catnip (Nepeta cataria spp. citriodora). What is the difference medicinally? Thanks!

If it’s Nepeta cataria, I’d guess it’s very similar regardless of the variety.
