StudentI apologize in advance for the long post but I feel that if I don’t explain the condition most people will not know what it is. For the past four or five years I have been dealing with cerebral fluid leak. Sometimes this leak occurs in the spinal column due to injury or medical procedures such as epidurals. It can also occur in the dura mater that surrounds the brain. Picture the brain inside a balloon made of dura matter. Inside that balloon is the cerebral spinal fluid that keeps your brain elevated. When the spinal fluid leaks out it can cause the brain to settle on the top of the spinal cord resulting in pretty bad headaches and it can also lead to meningitis. As I said leaks can be caused by injury or medical procedure, however this is not always the case. If they cannot determine what caused the leak they call it a spontaneous leak. This is my case. The dura mater consist of collagen. Therefore leaks can be caused by weakened or compromised collagen. The treatment is to be a still as you can without being upright or bending over. No stretching , turning twisting, straining , or lifting till the collagen heals over. This can take weeks or even months. I am currently battling my third round with it CSF leak. Caffeine helps with healing although it is not known why. Of course vitamin c really helps with the healing. I drink a lot of bone broth but am researching collagen supportive herbs. I make lipsomal vitamin c from camu camu. Berries, calendula, hibiscus, nettles, horsetail, and mangosteen are some of the herbs and food that I have been told are supportive. Does anyone have any thoughts on this and what I might work with?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorI’d use comfrey tincture sprayed on topically all along the base of the head, neck and back a couple of times a day. Might help to heal up the leak.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentI feel ya!
I’ve had 11 Lumbar Punctures (spinal taps). 3 of which ended up leaking. The headache this creates is the most excruciating pain a person can imagine. On a pain scale of 1-10, if childbirth is a 7, a “spinal headache” is a 30. I had to lay on my back and not move at all. The only thing that stopped the leaks were a blood patch. I no longer allow them to give me LPs. I just deal with the high pressure & pain from Intracranial Hypertension (caused by Chronic Lyme). Its more manageable then a CSF leak!!

StudentHi Renee, Are you still in the HGH forum? I wonder how you are doing now and would like to know more about your experiences. Been going through similar stuff myself. I hope you are doing much better and hope to hear back from you.

StudentTopic AuthorHi Robin! Yes I am still working on HGH- just slow at working through it. I am sorry to hear that you may be having trouble with CSF leak. I actually have a bout with it about every 12-18 months. My leak is in the head which causes my right nostril to leak like a waterhose at times! I make bone broth with our chicken and beef bones to drink. I also get the organic powder-type collagen to add to my drinks.
