I planted chicory this spring and it is thriving.    Can I harvest the roots this fall or do I need to let it establish itself for another year?  Are the leaves and flowers also used?

          Hi Cindy,

Someone can correct me here if I’m wrong but I think Chicory should be harvested (the root) early fall the first year or in the early spring. I think this is a biennial so as with most biennial plants that is how you harvest them, unless you want the seed and then the second year when they flower and seed. Also, if it’s a biennial then it will die off the second year after it goes to seed so I don’t think letting it get established is an issue.

              It’s usually perrenial.

              Chicory (Cichorium intybus)
