StudentLet me rephrase this. So for the past 20+ years my daughter has suffered terribly with constipation. Nothing, moves her bowels. OTC laxatives and enemas take several attempts to work. She is now on natural herbs and teas and after 2 weeks of trying, no real results. She will occasionally have a very difficult very dry painful BM (once/twice a week). She now suffers with hemorrhoids. Can anyone, Dr. Jones I’m sure she probably has a leaky gut, I’m concerned with diverticulitis. Where can I start with helping her. I can’t say she is a great clean eater, but mostly. I know she drinks lots of water daily. She is a marathon runner so she is physically fit. I really want to help her with this.
Thank you

StudentHi Sophia, I think you should offer more info to get into the potential deficiencies of her dis-ease. As Doc says, it is very helpful to have lab results to direct attention rather than offering potential solutions until you hit the right spot. For instance, many people are deficient in magnesium which can effect bowels and, also, sleep quality. Another potential deficiency could be fiber. Does she eat enough fiber throughout each day? Psyllium husk powder can help her if that is the issue. Ask her about her sleep habits and daily diet as well inquiring on her electrolytes and other supplements. Is she consuming pre and probiotics? And what medications is she taking, if any? Can she start a food diary? This would help you both to recognize anything missing from her diet, and ask for notes of when she is better or worse to identify problems as well. All of these can help to know what you can suggest for supporting the digestive tract. I would revisit that entire module for insight and direction to begin your efforts, it may be adding more dandelion root with quality yogurt and psyllium husks to her morning routine, magnesium supplement before bed, and possibly good epsom salt soak after her runs. Also, how is her stress level and her daily routine (morning start and evening finish to each day in particular)? I hope this offers some useful insight. Blessings and best of luck to you both.

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorExcellent advice Dawn. :0)
Sophia, in addition to Dawn’s excellent suggestions and once you’ve used them to try to get to the bottom of things, Have a look at the Digestive System lessons.
Things to also consider when you’re ready are the Digestive Support formula (used regularly) and the Colon – Constant patience formula (used as needed). Both recipes are here:
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentCould there be damage to the migrating motor complex (peristalsis)? This can happen via food poisoning, causing an auto-immune reaction damaging the nerves in the gut. The “wave” of movement taking your food through the body is impaired. Can she remember an instance of food poisoning at the beginning of this problem? Not everyone has an obvious case though, if indeed this is the cause. There is a blood test now to identify the antibodies if unsure: IBS Smart Test. Herbs to regenerate the nerves might be one idea? I’m new so don’t have any suggestions yet. Conventional medicine doesn’t offer much for this problem, though there are herbs that stimulate peristalsis: ginger is a great one.

StudentI would (while researching) and have used Plaintain. That is the ONLY thing that has ever worked for me.
I am not a fan of fiber from personal experience. It did more harm than good for me.
I know it’s very unpopular to say that. Lol

StudentI currently suffer from constipation issues as well with always having normal labs. I’m excited to learn what herbs will help.
