Hi Doc, A few questions about comfrey root please:

        1. Can one use comfrey leaves and roots interchangeably for open wounds in humans or are their properties not the same?

        2. I find it almost impossible to clean off all the mud from the roots. Is there a danger of introducing tetanus bacilli into open human wounds, using comfrey roots?

        3. Can one dry comfrey roots in the sun?

        4. Must I peel comfrey roots (the brown outer layer) before grinding it and if the answer is yes must it be peeled before or after drying?

        Many questions thank you!

The leaves can be used, but are not as effective as the roots.

I do not know about the bug issue, but we get as much off as we can. My wife, who helps in processing, is a clean freak.

Do NOT dry in the sun. Try to not let the product get over 95 or 100f.

You do not have to peel the roots. We grind in a pretty heavy duty meat grinder on the coarsest setting then dry. Faster drying is best.

              Hi Rosemary,

When I do roots, I find it helpful to grate them first, then dry it, then it is easier to further grind the flakes into powder. I got that idea from making potato flour: shred the potaoes in a grater, dehydrate the shreds, then grind the dried shreds into flour. Easy -peasy!

Tried a grater for roots ONCE. That is why we went to the meat grinder. When processing 10 plus pounds that is a plus too!!!

Different tools for different scales of operation. One herbalist’s “perfect solution” is another herbalist’s joke depending on production requirements. 🙂

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
