My husband and I are starting a community garden in the south of England, UK. We would love ideas of the best herbs to grow to benefit the most amount of people. We live at a retreat and conference centre so we are going to grow some culinary herbs for the kitchen but what medicinal herbs would be best for general use by people of our local community?
Whatever grows best in your zone would be best since that is what you’ll have the most likely success with, but with that said, I’ve found Calendula, Comfrey, Peppermint, Lemon Balm, Sage, Mullein, Gumweed, and Cayenne to cover just about every health issue I’ve come across with my own self and those around me.
Thank you Gregg, that’s helpful. We’ve grown most of those in the past but not Gumweed or Cayenne, I’m not sure we could grow them in the UK.
I’m looking forward to learning how to prepare and use the herbs we have grown in the past but not really used to their full advantage.
I have a similar goal. Our community garden sits barren most of the year. I would like to plant herbs for use by the Seniors at the Senior Center located just up the hill. What a great way to make new friends! I have the seeds, just need the weather to warm up a bit!
