StudentHello, Doc Jones would it be good to use the residue from the tinctures once you press them in your compost pile? Or would the vodka be a problem? Thank you, Joanne

Homestead InstructorSmall amounts of tincture marc can be throw in the compost pile. Just don’t do too much in a small pile or you can throw off the balance.

StudentIs it ok to toss out for the rabbits and deer? I don’t have a compost pile, live in the country, but hate to put it in the landfill where it does no one or nothing any good. Maybe as a “top dressing” to a raised bed?

Homestead InstructorI don’t think it would bother the taste of the deer meat but it may not be as good a deer attractant as your vegetable garden. Worth a try. ;0)
Seriously though. Spent tincture marc won’t hurt deer at all. I don’t know if they’d eat it though. If the alcohol hasn’t dried up before the deer eat it, just tell them not to operate heavy machinery until they’re sober again.

StudentI actually tossed some out a couple of days ago over the top of my recently decimated (bunnies) rhubarb patch (someone forgot to tell them that rabbits aren’t supposed to like rhubarb). Anyway, I figured it would be quite a few months before anything comes up out of the ground where they mowed it down, so the spent herbs and alcohol would have a long time to break down and help the soil. Well, next thing I know, the deer are over there munching on the spent marc! They normally don’t go into that area – so I guess whatever marc I had tossed was a tasty one to them! Good to know that they won’t die from it though. They likely wouldn’t do so in my yard so I could “use” them anyway!
