My Boston terrier has always had a little throaty sound issue as if there were some windpipe damage from when she was in a puppy mill as a breeder (Grrrr.) but no problems till this week. Yesterday she started coughing real hard and croaky sounding and acting like she was trying to cough up something. She never did cough up anything.

She eats and drinks well, no other symptoms presenting.

Vet says she has a bit of collapsed trachea, not unheard of in Bostons, likely aggravated by the allergies we all have been suffering this spring more than usual.

He gave her a steroid shot to reduce the throat inflammation and prescribed cough tablets that he said were kinda like mucinex. Mucinex (Guaifenesin) brings moisture to the mucosa and helps thin it out, so I understand.

        Now my questions:

        1. couldn’t there be an herbal treatment to relieve the trachea when it gets sticky and makes her want to cough?

Surely a nice mucilaganeous plant like plantain could help…….

        2. How would I apply it? I’m assuming internally.

With three other dogs, it needs to be a treatment that I can use for just her.

I have some dry plantain that I could grind and put it in some peanut butter. She’d love that. The new crop of plantain is up now so fresh is also an option.

I also have some dry marshmallow root.

Otherwise, she is a happy, healthy spunky little creature.

        Suggestions and comments?

        Thanks,

        Martha

I’m not a vet, but I would try a mixture of mallow and horehound, mixed with a big spoonful of honey. Those are common ingredients in throat lozenges.

I’m a vet and I think that looks pretty good. :0)
