In the past I had purchased what I intended to be dandelion. As an heirloom seed, the original plants grew to about 5-6 feet and had purple flowers that resembled that of chicory. This year, seedlings grew well but were not nearly as tall, reaching about a foot. Again they were covered with purple flowers.

An app identifies this plant  as ‘Chicory a species of Chicorium’. It very much appears to be chicory. Is this Italiko rosso truly a dandelion? I am going to dig the roots on what appears to be chicory and dry them for coffee!

Italiko rosso isn’t a species name. Italico rosso is a grape variety though…its a red wine grape. Still not a plant species name…just something nice Italian people say when they poke that grape into their mouth.

Here’s a lesson on chicory with some good pictures.

          Chicory (Cichorium intybus)
