This may seem like a weird question, so let me give a little context. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and friends have all spent time overseas as missionaries. In some of those countries people would regularly take a de-wormer just as a health routine. Back to the United States it is not really a common practice. Some still felt it was important even to continue in the US, but they didn’t find pharmaceuticals for this easy to obtain. So on their trips back to the mission field, they would de-worm themselves there (with its effectiveness sometimes very clear). I know the United States is viewed as very clean and thinking of humans having parasites seems to go more with primitive living conditions. However, we know of people who have pursued obtaining pharmaceuticals for this purpose and have benefitted greatly. And recently we went to get Pyrantel for our animals and the feed store had a big bottle of it that had dosing for humans on it! So all this has put on my mind the question, do humans in the US really have no parasite problems? Does living on a homestead with animals make you more likely to acquire parasites? If so, should people take herbal remedies for this? Is Pyrantel really used for humans as the bottle label indicated?
So curious what people think on this topic!

Actually, I believe parasite issues in humans are a lot more common than many people think, and is an area that many naturopaths test for (or have their clients tested for) and address. I have heard that working in close contact with livestock can contribute to parasites (not surprising if you think about it). Personally, I would probably be going an herbal route and only resort to conventional anti-parasitics if the situation was serious or herbs were not working.

Have you heard of the Truth About Cancer series? It is an excellent documentary series that is about 10 episodes long, and several of the naturopathic practitioners in it discuss parasite issues and their connection to a weakened immune system.

Sydney – you are right about the frequency of infestations – I’ve been watching other programs where many who live a very healthy lifestyle (some are even health coaches), eat just about as perfect a diet as possible, and don’t travel outside the US – and the things that they expel are frightening!  I’ve also seen and read about several people who had lumps in various places (and one even in her brain) and the doctors were convinced that it was cancer, and of course started the hard sell “you have to act today, you will die if you don’t do chemo immediately”.  These folks did what logical and smart people do and took some time to make the right decision.  Those who chose to go with treating parasites found that those lumps were egg sacks of parasites and they were “miraculously healed of cancer”!  The one with the supposed brain tumor – they opened her up to do the brain surgery and found no cancer, but did find a parasite having a grand time in her head!  So, I think that everyone in the US should do at least one good parasite cleanse to see how many oddball things in their health change – I’ve read some pretty amazing stories that I believe are true (and this from a natural skeptic)!

You might be interested in seeing what Doc Jones offers at the Homegrown Herbalist herb shop, and/or get in contact with a good naturopath in your area if possible parasite issues are something that you’d like to look into further.

Thank you, Sydney, for your thoughts. Glad to know I’m not the only one thinking this may actually be an issue for us in the US. I have no heard about that documentary. I will look it up!

I’m not as familiar with Fenbendazole. Is it the same as Pyrantel? Or a different dewormer?

That is a nice article and informative.  Something to really think about too.  I have been in healthcare since 1982 and through the decades things have changed so much-I don’t think I really want to be a part of it sometimes.  I have seen colleagues come-and they go.  On to other careers. My primary care physician-I got the sense it just isn’t a fulfilling career choice lately.  She’s bound to protocols and ‘push the pts through’ mentality.  I think concierge medicine will again get a foothold. This is not the first article I have seen that cites anti-parasitic meds as treatment for cancers.  Sometimes I just wonder what we have not been told.

Renee – according to what I’ve researched, chaga and other mushrooms REQUIRE hot water to extract the properties, then alcohol.  I know that I’ve read somewhere here not to heat the alcohol, so that puts it back in the camp of doing the hot water first, then alcohol.  There are quite a few places to learn how to properly extract the miracles of mushrooms – though I’ve not taken that plunge yet myself.  It doesn’t seem to be difficult, just more steps than our usual tincturing process.

When visiting a North Carolina many generation farm, I noticed a black walnut tree in the cow field. That must’ve been planted many years ago. Talking with the family and looking up black walnut hull was used to treat and prevent parasites

Parasites are much less common in countries with soap and clean water and toilets.

Most parasites are pretty host specific so you’re not likely to get worms from farm stock.

Pyrantel is a really safe wormer and is used in humans.

Herbs are good wormers too. See Slide #22

I am going to try Doc’s vet Worms Formula (using it for humans – hubby and I) and I started tincturing it this morning.  I did add 1 part cloves to it just for good measure.  Most of the parasite protocols online try and scare you with “bad herxheimer” (sp?) reactions if you don’t do a crapload of other stuff before you start killing the little suckers, but people around most of the world have been deworming for hundreds of years and I seriously doubt they are all doing the “really expensive protocol” that these online “opportunists” are using scare tactics to sell (unethical in my opinion).  I guess hubby and I will find out soon – though for the first two weeks, we’re just doing straight up Wormwood since my formula won’t be ready to use for 2 more weeks.  Anyone tried the Worms Formula from Doc and if so, what kind of results did you have?  What kind of a schedule did you use for the treatment if you used it?

Doc Jones – is Fenbendazole, Ivermectin, and/or Nitazoxanide safe to use with herbs?  Any contraindications?  It’s looking like there are some pretty hard to remove parasites in the US now, and those 3 drugs have been recommended by specialists in this area (but of course they don’t know anything about herbs and if the drugs play nice with herbs).  You definitely are one of a kind with your specialized knowledge!

The US had had an influx of parasites not seen a decade ago.  We cant for get that our gut flora can also be out of balance. I suggest you visit a natural path to check both parasites and gut microbiome to  be sure you target the correct “bugs”.

We have seen amazing results such as: less teeth grinding, sleeping through the night, no/less anger and tantrums, skin/rash issues, better digestive health, and are doing some now to hopefully help with allergies. We have had great success with mimosa pudica seed; and have also used pumpkin and pumpkin seeds, cloves, black walnut hulls, and wormwood.

I am studying to be a naturopath and I just finished a course on parasites.  There are many symptoms that are often associated with parasites but some common signs to look for are rashes, chronic gut issues, trouble sleeping at night (especially on the full moon), grinding of teeth, brain fog, allergies, fatigue and calcium deficiencies (which leads to bone decay and dental problems).  Often times candida and heavy metals are associated with parasites so if you choose to do a cleanse be sure to address these additional problems if you are dealing with them.  If you do not cleanse the whole body you can actually harm yourself by leaving these toxins to circulate and wreck havoc on the rest of the body.  I recommend doing a lot of research to be sure that you are doing the cleanse right!

P.S.- having odd skin issues can be a result of parasites along with grinding of teeth.  If you are thinking about doing a cleanse be sure to address healthy foundations like drinking plenty of water, eating clean foods and getting adequate rest.  Its important to prepare your body for the cleanse!  Hope this information helps you!

                                                                Hello everyone!

Yes, this is a huge topic in the health field now!  I just got finished doing a study on parasite cleanses at Trinity Schooling of Natural Health.  When doing a parasite cleanse it is very important to do a whole body cleanse before the parasite cleanse.  If you do not open up the BULLS (bowels, urinary tract, lungs, lymph, and skin) then the parasites will recirculate and wreck havoc on the body.  When the elimination pathways of the body are not fully opened then when you kill the parasites they will continue to circulate the body releasing toxins but not being eliminated.  So, it is important to do a full body cleanse to open up the BULLS and then do a parasite cleanse afterwards.  A clove tincture is great for killing the parasite eggs while black walnut will kill the adult parasites (depending on the parasite).  My school recommends DesBio’s product line for doing a parasite cleanse, however, I have never used this company before.  Hope this helps someone!  🙂
