StudentMy neighbor just called, wanting a recommendation for a kidney tonic. He is 70, has diabetes that he treats with insulin injections, and has urinary tract infections. Basically he wants some herbs that will keep him from having kidney failure down the road. I’ve seen marshmallow root, Uva Ursi, Dandelion Root, Astragulus, Dong Quai, and Parlsey Root recommended online. Any suggestions of what I can tell him? Thanks!

Homestead InstructorAll of the above are gOod kidney helpers. My favorite for chronic kidney trouble is nettle seed.
I’ve heard milkweed root is also good but haven’t ever tried it. If harVesting milkweed be sure it’s not dogbane which us pretty toxic.

Just watching movie Free Food w/James Sloane. He indicates that ripe juniper berries have an insulin effect.

Yup, juniper berries are good as are their cousins Cedar berries.
Juniper is a little stronger for kidney stuff and cedar berry is a little better for diabetes.

Yes. If you have a choice for diabetes use the Cedar. Otherwise Juniper will be helpful.

Just as a point of interest on the subject of diabetes, if the blood sugar is controlled then diabetic kidneys shouldn’t arise. I grow Gynura procumbens ’cause it’s good in a salad, but it could be a panacea for diabetics. Mine is in the shade house at the moment (flowering and producing seed) but I’ve heard of people growing it easily indoors. It’s very simple to grow and very nice to eat.
It’s supposed to lower the blood sugar of both type one and type two diabetes but not affect the blood sugar of a non-diabetic.
We might not get snow here but it gets down to about -6C (about 20F) and the cold doesn’t seem to affect it.

I had a play back error happen just as he started talking about crisco. Can you give us a run down on what I missed? My mum was cured of type 2 diabetes by going on the Atkins diet. I just about have to duck if I tell anybody this though. It’s amazing how hard some people hang on to their illness. It’s not cureable! The doctor says so! Dear me, how sad.
I eat like a caveman because my entire family has had diabetes….. Not me though, and I never will get it either.

Homestead InstructorA lot of type II diabetes can be turned around with diet. Huckleberry leaf tea (or billberry) has turned a lot of folks around too.

StudentReturning to the subject 4+ years later….There is a lot of juniper growing around here, but there are SO many varieties. Does it matter which juniper the berries come from?
