StudentI”m discouraged with the herbal remedies. In the old days when someone would get sick with a urinary tract infection or whooping cough.. or anything bacteria related sickness.. would they have died??
I have tried herbal remedies for UTI and (maybe) whooping cough.. for a child, which then would have to resort to antibiotics anyway because the herbs didn’t work.
What would we do without antibiotics???Ofcourse prevention is the way to go, but what do you do when faced with these challenging illnesses?

StudentTina – I feel your frustration and discouragement. I heal V.E.R.Y. slowly from wounds, always have, but I recently plowed up the concrete with my knee taking off skin and making it very sore. I have tried for over a week to get this silly thing well, using comfrey oil and even plantain tincture topically (I didn’t even dilute it). I’ve used other herbal remedies with varying degrees of success, but for wounds, no success. I have to resort to the medicated bandages (who knows WHAT is on those…), or use other over the counter boo boo creams and such. I have a “mystery cheleitis (sp?)” that has been popping up on my upper lip now for about 14 months. I’ve tried all kinds of herbal things, but nothing so far will kill it. It comes and goes and not only is it ugly, but it hurts. So yes, I am not here to bash herbal remedies because I’m totally IN this lifestyle now, but for healing things (externally anyway) – I just cannot get a handle on it. I know I need to spend a LOT more time on the studies, but honestly my life is just stupid busy and has been for a while. Seriously hoping that this winter I can cut some of the excess busy-ness out of my life so I can dive back into my studies here like I should have been doing for quite a while now. Here’s what I think for me, and it might be the case for you as well. Since we know that we are all different, one herb does X to person one, and that same herb does Y (or nothing) to person 2. So I think what is going to be what I need is much more learning about how the body functions and what the different herbs to to different organs. I think once I have time to watch the lessons more AND TAKE NOTES (because I retain the info much better that way) – then hopefully it will sink in better as to why something does or does not work for me regarding some specific need. Don’t despair. You and I will both get there in time – this course is super top notch, so we just have to have it “become” part of us in our daily walk and knowledge! Hope this helps a little.

Homestead InstructorSharon, I don’t recommend oils or lotions on wounds. I’d either use the comfrey herb as a poultice or, better yet, as a diluted tincture. The poultice formula would be a good idea. It’s in the Wound Management lessons.
As to the cheilitis, have you had a doctor look at it to see exactly what going on? It can be caused by a number of different things. If herbs are changing it, it may be something else. Sometimes it’s from an iron or vitamin B deficiency etc…
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentHey Doc – GREAT to see you back in the forum again. I know your life must be incredibly busy, so thanks! I briefly thought about a diluted tincture, but I was hurting and not thinking, so I grabbed the comfrey oil (right herb, wrong method of application obviously). Note to self – think harder!
Regarding the doctor for the cheilitis – she was “rated” as one of the better dermatologists in our area, but when I asked what caused the issue, she shrugged her shoulders and said “could be caused by a lot of things – not really any way to know for sure”! So your guess without even seeing it is likely a lot better than she could do on a good day. Would blood tests show us anything regarding any deficiencies that could be the culprit?
And since I’m bending your ear (so to speak), would you recommend that my chickweed tincture be done fresh with a higher alcohol percentage or dry it and use vodka? I hear both of course on the world wide mis-information web! Thanks for everything Doc – you are absolutely the bomb for teaching us lost and wandering herb lovers!

StudentI hear your frustration, and know you are searching for answers- some great responses so far. I just wanted to encourage you to keep learning and striving for knowledge , and experiences. in the past year many of my neighbors, friends and relatives have started reaching out to me for alternatives and I am super happy to say most have gotten very good results from the herbs and formulas…. there have been a few times we had to make some adjustments . I do get frustrated sometimes but it is more because I know there is something I need to learn and researching the info can be daunting sometimes. I hope you keep on with your journey.
