My dog has a split claw on his left rear foot. It is split horizontally, so the top of the claw is lifted away from the bottom, all the way to the quick. He’s licking it incessantly. I’m keeping it as clean as possible. There is no bleeding. Four days until we can get the vet to see him. They said they’ll cut off the top and give him antibiotics (which I’d rather not do if possible.) Poor dog is mopey, but still excited about eating. Not limping, but being careful of that foot. Should I employ the “cone of shame”? Which makes him even more miserable btw. Thanks for any insight.

Sorry to hear that your dog’s claw has split like that.

Whenever my dog won’t stop licking, due to injury or irritation, I put the cone of shame on him. If I don’t, the constant licking tends to make things worse.

Hi sorry to hear about the injury. My dog did the same, left rear believe it or not, a bandage and the cone of shame was the only way to go to stop her incessant licking. She is now fully recovered and back to bounding about.
