Hi, my almost 2yr old german shepherd started having seizures 7 months ago. The vet gave me Keppra for them but she still has very frequent seizures on the meds (avg 1 a week). Used to be more but I started using zeolite spray for detox a couple months ago. Also give CBD oil daily and transitioning from kibble to more whole food diet. I’m desperate but can’t afford a dog neurologist and MRI right now. Does anyone have any suggestion for treatment with herbs? Anything known to decrease inflammation in the brain? Thank you <3

          Hi Christie,

We are sorry we don’t have any suggestions for you.

          But…

We are looking for similar information and thought if we post on your post maybe we will both get some suggestions!

We have a grandpuppy, Denali, a chocolate lab that has been experiencing occasional seizures. It is our son’s dog and he has ordered the Kidney – Builder Powder. He asked us what is a kidney friendly diet or is a raw diet acceptable. Denali loves beef, pork, vegetables of all types and apples as well. He will actually eat about anything we give him. We have noticed his gums are very white. We are looking for suggestions on how to help Denali avoid these dang seizures.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

          Thanks in advance!

Hi.  My daughter has a blue heeler that is having seizures on about a monthly basis.  The vet didn’t really have any recommendations and didn’t feel like the seizures were frequent enough to place on medications at the time.  I wonder how frequent is too frequent for seizures.  I am also looking for an herbal solution.

My Rhodesian Ridgeback/Boxer mix had several seizures and we finally realized he would have them days after he was given flea treatments. Something you may be doing that’s out of the ordinary may be worth looking into. The vet didn’t notice the pattern, we did and he never had a seizure again after we stopped the particular flea med he was on. We also found a little honey or something sweet after the seizures helped bring him around faster, otherwise he was out all day. Best wishes to you all!

Hello to all, I wonder if “teasel root” would work?  I have listened to Docs YT videos on teasel and how it helped a human with a seizure.  So maybe for the dogs too.  It is good for nerves.  I just made a tincture of it.  But maybe you could steep a tea, strain and give it as broth? Hope that helps.

Hi Herb –  Have you used teasel for a dog to abate a seizure?  If so,  please let us know how it goes.

I feel for you all!  Have any of your dogs had a rabies vaccine prior to the seizures?

Just to clarify, our border collie went down hill fast after he had a rabies shot..  Never replaced him.  He was the best dog ever. Will always miss him.

Though my dog had already experienced several mild seizures, usually around her heat cycles, she did experience a cluster of 7 seizures following her rabies vaccine that required a high speed trip to urgent care.

Hi! Brand new student here :). I am also trying to help someone whose dog is having periodic seizures. We thought they may have a food trigger, so her diet is incredibly clean and fresh now. Did anyone have any luck with the teasel root on dogs? Thank you and God bless!

I’m not sure if Teasel would help, but my thought is maybe look into Skullcap? Scutellaria Lateriflora aka American Skullcap. It has been known to help with convulsions.

                            Have a blessed day!

My 2 year old muttsky dog started having cluster seizures about 6 months ago. She came from the shelter and was most likely double vaxxed with rabies. She has 6 or 7 seizures about once a month. I don’t use any flea, tick or heartworms meds on her and she eats a raw diet. Her holistic vet prescribed  liquid diazepam squirted up her nose to end the seizure clusters. And then CBD with a tiny amount of TCH as a daily preventative.  Its not holding so I’m experimenting with increasing the dosage. I’m very interested in the teasel and skullcap possibilities. Thanks very much.

Ive used skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) with some success but neither (nor the combination of the two) is better than the meds.

I have a 14 year old chihuahua mix that has epilepsy.  We rescued her from a hoarding situation in 2019 and were able to obtain all of her records.  She had been on Phenobarbital from the age of 2, and was up to 16mg twice daily.  Long story short, in 2021 her liver became toxic (her ALT was over 3000 and her AST was over 600) and we had to figure out a different treatment while simultaneously healing her liver.  This also affected her gall bladder, so we had to switch her to a very low fat diet (I feed her a low fat whitefish based raw food diet). We stopped the phenobarbital, and switched her to Gabapentin and Keppra, and I started her on Melatonin, CBD, Milk Thistle, and Sam-E.  I also introduced raw sheep milk for pre/probiotics (she is allergic to goat milk).  The melatonin and cbd helped to heal her liver and also calm her nervous system.  Her liver enzyme numbers started to drop and her seizures started to be more infrequent.  My vet is fantastic and we share studies and information back and forth about treatment, especially since her body has started to build up a tolerance to her meds.  Our vet tried to add Potassium Bromide and Zonisimide to her regimen, but both of those made her act very drunk, and she could barely function.  So I had to do some digging to see what I could add to keep her seizures at bay without making her into a stumbling zombie.  Today, she is still on the gabapentin, keppra, and the other supplements I listed, and I have added tumeric, quercetin, passion flower, cilantro, taurine, NAC, CoQ10, propolis, boswellia, ginger, PEA, and lion’s mane and reishi mushroom extract.  It seems like a lot, but her last round of bloodwork was done on 9/18/24 and her ALT was down to 222 and her AST was down to 85.  She has 1 or 2 very short seizures (30-45 seconds) every 5 to 7 weeks and I have started to give her skullcap and valerian root for 2-3 days post seizure to stop any clusters from occurring.  I have done a TON of research using peer reviewed medical studies and have always passed the information to my vet for approval prior to dosing.  On December 12, she will turn 15 years old and I am hoping to get her to 20!
