Dog with scales on nose

I have a 3-yr old yellow lab whose nose used to be black. The nose turns brown then pink/ white-ish, bumpy and scale-like in the fall thru winter months.  I have put Vaseline on it, thinking maybe it is chapped. Doing that keeps it from getting worse.  If left untreated, it grows up the fur on the snout too. Vet has not seen anything like it. Any suggestions welcome. He has no pain with it. Don’t know how to add a picture.
