StudentHi! Doing my first post after 3 years of casual HGH study and getting amped to hit it full bore. I’ve just started a functional nutrition program and I am wondering what your favorite ways are to incorporate herbs into your meals/day. My favorite is to throw a bunch of herb powders into my smoothies every morning. I’ll create a small jar of mixed herbs (some that I like to use are burdock, spiralina, marshmallow, beet root, siberian ginseng, alfalfa, and more). Then I put a big spoonful into my smoothie and blend it up. When my jar runs out after a couple of weeks, I mix a slightly different concoction. What are your favorite ways to add herbs into your daily foods?

StudentWe keep a similar jar of veggies, not herbs, that have been dried and powdered and sprinkle it on a lot of stuff just like we might with salt. The one I have on the counter now is beet leaves, carrot tops, zucchini leaves, celery leaves, radish leaves, and lovage leaves. We just put the powder in a salt shaker and sprinkle it anytime we add salt (helps us remember to add it to our meal). Smoothies just aren’t a smoothie to me without any fruit juice and since we are currently on the herbal cleanse and fruit juice isn’t on the menu, I’ll have to defer my smoothies with herbs till later!

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentI’ve just recently purchased a new freeze dryer. My hopes are to be able to make my own fresh powdered greens, veggies, fruits etc. I’m new to all this but very excited to learn and start this journey!

This is a good idea. Powdered herbs on healthy food of course. I mean…it’s already done with garlic and some other herbs that are in the average person’s spice drawer.
I already really like celery seed. I think celery seed is underrated in the kitchen, and it’s very medicinal too. Good for blood pressure.

StudentI agree celery seed is excellent spice/herb to add to our foods. I like adding celery seed to my rice and soups.

Well, quoting Dr. Jones is good too 🙂. I forget the quote button is above the post.

StudentI like to think of the things that are growing along my path outdoors are offering up a healthy snack or something that will help me with my health. And of course one should be discerning about this. : )

StudentI like to use herbs is in homemade salad dressing / vinaigrette. I also enjoy adding them to smoothies, like you do. The other thing I have been known to do is “taste” herbs when I’m tending the garden – mints, lemon balm, basil, etc…herbs that I really like. lol

StudentHi Darcy, two books that I found useful in learning how to incorporate herbs into my daily life are Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs and Samuel Thayer’s The Foyager’s Harvest. Gladstar provides actual recipes and “how-tos”; whereas, Thayer explains how he uses the herbs in meal preparation but does not give recipes with amounts/specifics. Gladstar goes into detail about 33 herbs and how to grow and use them. Thayer chooses 32 plants that he goes into significantly more detail about how to identify them in the wild, but he does explain how to use them as well.
