So you wake up and can feel something coming on, your throat hurts, ears hurt, just starting to come on. What do you take to try to prevent it from getting worse or help it get over faster?
Just wondering what you would take, I am just starting out and am wondering what I should stock up on….and yes I am sick

I will be interested in what is recommended here. What I do is take massive amounts of vitamin d3. I get mine in 5000 units and I take 4 or 5 of them along with double doses of vit C. If you catch it soon enough this will do the trick. If you have any essential oils, oregano on the feet a couple of times a day would kill whatever is trying to take you down. I will be anxious to hear some herbal remedies.

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorIf it’s in the early stages, sometimes a good sweat will nip it in the bud.
Make a tea with equal parts:
Elder flowers
Mint (peppermint, lemon balm catnip)
yarrow.
Drink two cups, have a hot bath and go to bed under covers to induce a good sweat.
Also, take garlic and echinacea every couple of hours. Echinacea is a mild herb and really works best taken every two or three hours while you’re awake.
I take vitamin C by the handful throughout the day too.
I also have a formula I call “Shoo Flu” that I make using three Silver Lining products (silverliningherbs.com) Respiratory Support, Immune Support and INF-X. I mix the three together and take a teaspoon several times a day. Belive me, after a day or two of that stuff you’ll really want to get better (capsules help a lot!). 😉
Get better.

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorIf you feel really wrung out and lousy use the herbs with deep tap roots.
Burdock
Dandelion root
Chickory
Make a brew of any or all and drink a cup every few hours.
elecampane, licorice, rehmannia and siberian ginseng are also wonderful for making you feel less lousy.
if you need an expectorant, licorice, wild cherry bark and gumweed are good.

Thanks so much. I tried a detox bath when I first started to feel bad, from what I read its supposed to help you sweat out the bad stuff, it didn’t help a ton but I was already feeling pretty bad so it might have been to late. What has helped is I read to boil water and then add crushed/chopped fresh garlic and them inhale the steam (I get sinus infections any time I get a cold) and it has helped a ton! I am almost all better after just two days of doing that 3 times a day but now my two boys (age 1 and 4) are getting sick so I will see what I can try. When can you harvest burdock root? We have tons growing by our place and if I can harvest it when ever I may try getting some of that.

Homestead InstructorBurdock is a Bi-ennial. The roots are best dug in the fall of the first year or the spring of the second year.
I started coming down with something nasty this week myself.
I made up a gallon of the following and it knocked it right out. My son was about three days sicker with a bad throat. Cleaned him up too.
FIrst I took a spoonful of Garlic blended up with olive oil a couple of times.
The Tea (equal parts), drank a cup every few hours:
Echinacea
Yarrow
Licorice
Dandelion Root
Burdock
Parsley
Cayenne
Peppermint
Eleuthero
1/2 or so of cup honey
Make a tea and strain through a cloth.

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorI did about a tablespoon of each/gallon.
I also added a fair bit of honey.
It tasted very nice with a bit of zing from the cayenne.
2nd year root on the Echinacea is more potent than first year.

You must have taste buds of steel!!!
So I made the garlic/oil and added a little honey even thought i knew it would be gulping down not tasting it was hard to get the first one down and a few hours later was brave enough for another spoonful but I dont know if I am brave enough for a third! I made a tea with what I had
1 gallon water
burdock root (I know its summer but I figured it wouldn’t help to try I added some stems and leaves too online it said you could…)
dandelion root
1 T dry yarrow that I grew 🙂
1 T parsley flakes (that is probably not what you meant by parsley but it was all I had)
1/2 T cayenne
little less than 1/2 C honey
oh it wasnt bad but oh did my mouth burn! I think I am just a whimp, how big is your cup! I filled half a mug and got 3 big gulps down but couldnt get myself to take the last one. Maybe I will just drink a little more often just a sip or two. But it didn’t taste gross just spicy.

StudentI started to get a cold two days ago. I started taking Elderberry syrup, 1 oz, every few hours. Drank Yarrow, mint and brigham tea a lot. My sinuses were still feeling very stuffed and uncomfortable. I then prepared a syrup of raw honey, that we harvest, some of the tea and some cayenne. I took this with a spoon and it helped right away.
Today, less than two days later I almost have it beat. By the way I feel today tomorrow I will be over it completely tomorrow, just two and 1/2 days from the on set.
I also took Dr. Christophers formula Anti-plague, which I make myself.
All of these formulas I took orally so that the healing would start in the mouth, no capsels.
I am thrilled with the results and glad to be on the mend.
