StudentHey Y’all!
I am a newly enrolled student from Texas. After 15+ years of going to doctor after doctor with no positive changes in my own health, and seeing the same thing happen with my son, I have decided to take our health into my own hands (as far as I can). I took a cold and flu class from Homesteading Family, and that only fueled my desire to know more. I have been looking at this program for a while now, and after discussing it with my husband, we decided that it was time to begin.
The title of this post reflects my sheer excitement to be a part of this community. I have tried to discuss herbs and remedies with so many people, and everyone’s eyes just seem to glaze over after a while. I once was a skeptic of natural medicine and I can tell that, especially in my area, most people think the same way that I used to. I cannot wait to expand my knowledge and put into practice what I learn here, in order to demonstrate to my community that there are OTHER ways to handle your health.

StudentI feel like that too! I always feel bad when I talk to people about my little garden and watch their eyes glaze over because they either don’t understand me or don’t care about what I’m talking about. I feel like the school and everyone wants to keep pushing medications on my sons hyperactivity and lack of focus and (as someone that was forced to take such medications) I refuse for that to be the first option for my child. I feel like there are better options- I just need to look and learn about them.

StudentTopic AuthorI agree! I have had some sort of arthritis and what the doctors “think” is psoriasis for the last 15 years. I have been on so many medications, some with very serious side effects. My son (14) has asthma and has struggled with it since he was 2 months old. He has consistently had a case of bronchitis and a case of pneumonia every year for the past 10 years. It’s always the same treatment…steroids, antibiotics, breathing treatments, plus inhalers. I am finally realizing what you stated above, “I feel like there are better options-I just need to look and learn about them.”
I am so excited about this course! Even after only completing the first module over the “lingo”, I felt so empowered. I am ready to learn as much as I can!

StudentHello! I’m from Texas too! (Burleson, south of Fort Worth) Maybe we can share info about native plants in our area. 🙂
I started this course over a year ago and I’m determined to get it finished. I am fortunate to have a few friends who are also interested in herbs. (One started the course after I did and finished long ago!) Looking forward to learning and sharing.

StudentTopic AuthorHowdy to a fellow Texan! I am located between Lubbock and Amarillo. I would love to learn and share about native plants! As of now, I know nothing, so I won’t be of much help, but I am eager to learn! I haven’t found many resources as far as herbalists, or shops in my area. I am hoping to finish this course and be able to spark a movement out here.

Homestead InstructorIt’s interesting how different disciplines attract different temperaments. I’ve worked closely with people in several different types of disciplines; researchers, physicians, pet owners, groomers, vets, naturopaths, cat breeders, dog breeders, parrot breeders, dairymen, beef guys, poultry guys, swine guys, horse people, professional musicians, amateur musicians (I use to own IrishFluteStore.com) etc… Among all those types of folks, people that like herbs are the sweetest, most caring and curious. I just love ’em. If you’re going to be in a family, a family full of herb nuts is a good one to be in. Welcome to all of you. :0)

StudentHi All. This is my first post and am so glad that I’m here. This topic of “Found My People” just had to be my first posting because I can so relate to reactions from folks (my husband–LOL) that act like we are weird people when we get excited about “weeds”. I am looking forward to learning, sharing, and helping my friends and family at a time when so many things are uncertain. Also, looking forward to getting to know “My People”. Now to learn how to insert my picture.

Homestead InstructorHi Sally Jo,
To put your picture on, click on the Profile button on the top right corner of the page.
When you get to the profile section, click the button that says Settings. Then click the button that says Avatar (avatar is the computer nerd word for little picture…or a large blue alien…). Anyway, once you get to the avatar section, you’ll see how to upload your picture (We don’t have enough bandwidth to upload large, blue aliens).

StudentI also am from Texas. Near Denton/DFW area. I also do not have many people who get as excited about herbs and plants that have medicinal uses! I don’t like to run to pharmaceuticals right out of the gate and most of the people I am surrounded by do. When I try to tell them about natural remedies they just kindly nod their heads and go about their own ways. I have been gardening for the last 4 years-ish and this past year started accumulating and planting things with multiple benefits (pollinator attracting/supporting, medicinal, edible and beautiful). I am so happy to find others who are just as excited about natural healing as I am! And I am looking forward to learning how to harvest and make use of the things I am growing!

StudentI understand the feeling. I’m a vet nurse and I can hear some of my colleagues disapproval in their voice. Luckily I work in a small mom n pop vet and the old school doctors understand the benefits and place of herbal medicine.

Hi there! Here from Michigan also.
This is my first day posting in the forums and I’m super excited to go deeper with all of you. I worked as a nurse for 3 decades and always discussed holistic medicine with anyone who would listen, even on my job.
I really do appreciate the expertise of a needed surgeon, however, I too started many years ago using and making some medicinals for personal use as my needs were not being met medically.
Great successes to you all!

StudentI’m from Michigan too! Anybody else in the UP? It was funny, when we moved into our new (somewhat neglected) home, there were nettles growing in the yard! I was so excited! Who else but a fellow herbie would be excited about nettles? 😀
Just signed up on Monday. I’ve completed the Learning the Lingo class, and I’m about to start the Herbal Cleanse class. I have such a hard time staying awake for videos. But if I’m knitting or crocheting, I can stay awake. Looks like I’ll be doing a LOT of knitting and crocheting this winter!

StudentHi Everyone! I’m Di from San Diego. I, too, am looking forward to learning all I can so that I can use medicinal herbs with confidence for myself and my family. My four grown daughters are excited for me to share with them all the various “remedies” and help them achieve better healing options. I was just reading about the healing benefits of cactus on another feed, and we have so many types all around my home. Lately as I drive by them, I look and wonder what I can use them for . I think the prickly pears are calling me! I have found an additional benefit of cactus, and that is for protection. I have a huge cactus growing outside of my bedroom windows. I am happy that I can open my windows up for fresh air while I sleep knowing that no one in their right mind will brave the cactus to break in!
