StudentI made a nurse visit to someone that had a gallbladder drain in place for several weeks and approximately has 3 more weeks to go. She is on a liquid diet for 3 more weeks as well. I hadn’t said anything to them about herbal remedies. The patient had used 2 different natural supplements by her own doing last night and had increased abdominal pain and increased gallbladder drainage in her bag. The supplements were a brand called SISEL. One was a formula called Avenger and the other formula was called Balance D.
The Avenger formula has the following ingredients: monolaurin, olive leaf extract, lotus leaf extract, elderberry fruit extract, ashwaghanda root extract, cats claw bark extract, chaga fruit extract, ceanothus americanus root, garlic bulb, lime fruit. The dosage just says propriety blend 2535mg. 4 caps.
The Balance D formula has the following ingredients: resistant maltodextrin, inulin(chicory root), apple fruit fiber, lactobacilus rhamnosus, lactobacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus acidophilus. Dosage says propriety blend 3070mg. 7 caps.
She doesn’t plan on taking them again due at this time due to the increased abdominal pain with it.
My thoughts are that it has a lot of herbs that are expectorants, anticatarrhals, and alteratives that increase excretory functions and it was too much for her and increased bile production and causing discomfort. The good flow through her drainage tube is good but might be too much of a good thing. Plus some of these herbs are also diuretics’ and don’t want to dehydrate her. The lotus leaf says it helps fat breakdown by also blocks absorption of fats and prevents carbs and fats from being absorbed. Which the gallbladder plays a huge role in fat breakdown. I noticed the monolaurin ingredient is derived from coconut fat and says it reduces inflammation “lipid bilayers.” I think if she were to take several specific herbs rather than such a huge list in this formula it would be a better idea. However I am not making recommendations at this time since I am still learning. Just trying to learn with this situation as to what would have been good and what wouldn’t have been good for her to take in these ingredients.
I would love to hear Docs thoughts on this case study!

Homestead InstructorOther than the chicory root none of those herbs have a significant effect on bile production or flow.
One wonders too if she was on pharmaceuticals that the herbs didint play nicely with.Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentTopic AuthorThanks for your reply Doc! She was on 2 antibiotics but were finished before she started the herbal supplements. She was not on any other meds. However we have now found out her pancreas is not fully functional and having part of her pancreas removed. Hope she has a good outcome and recovery. Thanks again for your feedback!

Homestead InstructorA grumpy pancreas can certainly cause abdominal pain.
Tell not to take any herbs for a week or so prior to any surgery if she hasn’t had it already.
