I have heard you have to be careful about not having too much ginger during pregnancy and the highest dose you can safely have is actually very little. Is that true? If so, do you also have to be careful during lactation?

My wife and I have recently completed a pretty extensive exploration of the safety of herbs in pregnancy and lactation. We checked a lot of sources and research. The list of findings is the first lesson in the Individual Plants section.

I was always a little careful with using too much ginger during pregnancy but after our project. It appears that it is very safe unless very large (larger than medicinal doses) amounts are consumed.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Thank you for that answer Doc Jones!  I used a lot of ginger for colds during my first three pregnancies because it was available, affordable and effective (I was in México at the time)It wasn’t until I was back in the states that I heard ginger could be problematic during pregnancy which I balked at but still wondered. Nice to have some affirmation that it is safe.
