Hello ! I was just wondering if anyone would have some advice for my 1 year old Nubian buck that currently has diarrhea ? He is on a simple diet of half a cup of organic oats and given free choice hay and minerals. He is given a herbal dewormer every 6 weeks. He has been being bullied by another buck and I am wondering if it is stressing him and causing him to have the runs or if it is something else. I have been giving him raspberry leaves and bananas to bind him and also giving him marshmallow leaves, chamomile, and peppermint leaves as well. He has lost interest in eating and drinking and will only really eat the Chamomile and a bit of grass and alfalfa pellets that I put in his oats to make him eat. I have noticed he has lost weight but he still seems energetic for the most part. I also gave him some nutra blend to bump up his sugars and keep him hydrated. Any suggestions would be great !

        Thanks,Elizabeth

You might need to get him tested for parasites. I have experienced very similar issues with our goats, and severe diarrhea is one of the major symptoms of parasites (though you might want to get him tested so that you know for sure what is going on).

I like to raise my goats as naturally as possible (i.e. minimal to no chemical interventions), however, sometimes parasite cases can get so advanced/aggressive that herbs are not enough. I’ve had cases in our goat herd that have been very severe, and have had to use a pharmaceutical dewormers (we generally use Safeguard or Eprinex on our farm-and very rarely at that-though I’m sure there are other good options out there). After that, I follow up with herbs a week or so later (NOT combined with the dewormer medication) and probiotics. Immune support is super important also!

Making sure that he is not eating damp feed or on a damp pasture, and that his pen is clean are also helpful preventative measures.

          Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your suggestions Sydney ! I ended up giving my buck some Ivermectin and within a day he bounced back into perfect health and is eating and drinking now and going the bathroom perfectly ! I am a big believer in Ivermectin 🙂 He also will be given a herbal dewormer later on this month. I believe he possibly may have contracted Coccidias as one of the causes a goat can get it is due to stress  (which he was experiencing due to another buck that was bullying him)

Thanks again for you input !

You bet 🙂 So glad to hear that he is doing better! We have Ivermectin on hand for ours also, it’s definitely an excellent option.
