StudentHi Doc,
I just wrapped up Immune & Lymphatics lesson #2 and during the discussion of cytokine storms you talked about Grape Leaf tincture to help stop/slow those symptoms in the lungs. I’ve looked in three herbal reference books and in your materia medica section and cannot find anything on Grape Leaf and I have some questions.
- What are the properties of Grape Leaf that work medicinally in the body?
- Do you recommend combining it with other herbs for a synergistic effect?
- When do you harvest – young or old? Do you dry before tincturing or use fresh?
- Does it matter what variety of grape?
Can you please discuss further this herb?
Thank you,
Michele

StudentHello Michelle, I had a thread for Cytokine Balance Formula, Grape Leaf Substitute which covered some of your questions. While you wait for a complete answer from Doc, I thought this link would be helpful. https://homesteadacademy.com/forums/topic/substitutions-for-grape-leaf-in-cytokine-balance-formula/
No, it does not cover all of your questions, but it does lean into the information that you are requesting. I hope you find it useful 😉

StudentCan’t quite remember where this info was…might have been a live webinar but Doc said that if a Cytokine storm was happening he would be taking the grape leaf and pine and chaga together to stop the storm. Not much but related to your question a little. Great question 🙂

StudentI was thinking it was the resveratrol in the grape leaf and that he mentioned something about how pine needle worked in a similar manner. I’m not sure about type of grape, but I do recall how he talked about not really finding a difference medicinally between the white and red grape.

Homestead InstructorGrape leaf contains resveratrol which is an anti-inflammatory that decreases cytokines. I dry mine before tincturing. Darker grapes are supposed to make stronger leaves but I haven’t noticed a difference.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you Doc! I’ve also read that rhubarb root contains resveratrol. Do you ever make tincture of rhubarb root and use it for this benefit?

StudentIs there any benefit to using the skin and seeds?. I recently used up all my DIY grape juice and dehydrated the skin and seed. I think I saw that they also contain Resveratrol.

StudentI have these same questions! I have found some info in a few other posts, but not clear answers to these questions.
Use fresh or dry grape leaves to make a tincture?
When do you harvest?
Thx

Homestead InstructorI harvest them when they’re young but fully grown and look happy and healthy. I tincture them dry.
