I am looking to possibly grow elderberry. I have been seeing that it can be invasive, but I have also seen Dr. J say Black Elderberry is manageable with pruning. Is there a variety that isn’t invasive? or is it better to avoid? This would be planted in Redding, CA where I don’t think I have ever seen it grow.

I am a brand new student, just signed up today, and am currently debating with my husband where to plant our elderberry starts on our property. If there are any users who have had experience growing it, I’d love to hear their take on placement. I’m leaning toward using it as a bit of a privacy hedge near the edge of our property, but concerned with how far off of the fence line I need to plant it to prevent it from getting into the neighbor’s pasture. We are in SW Oklahoma, by the way.
