StudentHey Doc, how did growing turmeric go for you? Were you able to get it to go?

Homestead InstructorHaven’t gotten it done yet. I still need to try it.
Anybody else playing with turmeric cultivation? I thought it might work to treat it like a dahlia and dig it up and keep it in the cellar in the fall.

StudentMine grew small rhizomes last year, so I planted some new shoots. Nothing happened so I was ready to empty the pot when I noticed some new shoots. I am keeping them in pots or more correctly boxes this year to see if that allows for more sideways growth. My ginger finally came up and I planted it in the ground just see if that would yield larger rhizomes. It has been unseasonably cool for this time of year in VA, so everything is struggling a little. i am thinking the weather conditions have a lot to do with the success.

StudentMy turmeric has done well in large containers. I didn’t dig them up this winter and they seem to be starting up quite nicely. My dogs like to eat the green coming up. Might try and keep some over the winter out of the soil. Too much early rain can make them mushy. I live in the sunny southeast US.

Homestead InstructorWhat zone are you in? My biggest concern is the winter here.

StudentHi Doc! Newbie here so I’m just now reading older posts. I grow turmeric in a big pot outside in the summer in an area of part shade since it is naturally an understory plant. Same with the ginger I grow. When the temps start going down here in zone 6, I put it in a heated greenhouse that stays 45-50 degrees. It goes dormant and I harvest rhizomes then.  I cut back on water just enough that the soil doesn’t dry out. It is very sleepy in the spring and doesn’t break dormancy till June. Right now it is about three feet tall, lush and will bloom soon. It seems like your theory about keeping it in the cellar should work. Good luck!

StudentWe are in 9a. I grow my turmeric in my greenhouse and it grows like CRAZY. Beautiful, 4 foot high plants with incredibly beautiful flowers. My friend shared a few tubers last year which I planted; I harvested probably 40 lbs. of tubers, after replanting. No matter how carefully I think I dig it all up, I inevitably leave some behind so it keeps reappearing in more and more spots. LOL.
