StudentWhen the flowers on my elder plant (that doesn’t produce berries because I don’t have two plants) die off, will the medicine of the plant go back into the leaves?
Along these same lines, after an elder plant produces berries and they die off or are harvested, does the medicine of the plant go into the leaves?
So basically after elder flowers and berries are done producing, is it a good time to harvest leaves?

Homestead InstructorAs long as the leaves still look healthy and lively, they’ll be fine.

StudentWhat a good question. I have seen mentions about the use of elder leaves. What will you do with elder leaves? I am blessed with an abundance and need to learn about how they are used.

Homestead InstructorElder leaf (Sambuccus nigra) has some good antiviral properties particularly for influenza and coronaviruses. Have a look at the Respiratory System Lesson. :0)
I don’t use elder leaf on children. It’ll give them a bellyache. I’ve never had issues with adults as long as they have some food in their stomach. Which, really is a good idea with about any herb if you don’t want a bellyache.Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentDo the leaves of other elder work for this? I have several blue elderberry for fruit, and the red grow native on our place, but only one small sad black (it had to live in a pot on a patio for a few years, so it was stunted a bit. Recovering, but slowly.)

Homestead InstructorI’ve used all of the above. The only one I don’t use is red elder Sambucus racemosa
