StudentIs it recommended to heat a tincture or glyceride to speed up the process? My daughter-in-law just tested positive for Covid, I’d like to make a tincture for ease while she is so sick and not feeling like making teas. But waiting two weeks for it to infuse won’t work, I’m certainly hoping she will be better by then!

Homestead InstructorHonestly, I think the time for alcohol to extract the goodies from a powdered herb is probably more like a day than two weeks but I don’t have any real chemist data to confirm that. If you’re in a hurry, you can just put powdered herbs in some apple sauce or a smoothie and get them in to her. Or you can buy some tinctures and have the shipped quickly.
I wouldn’t use heat on a tincture and I don’t care much for glycerites due to the poor shel life.

StudentThis gave me something to think about. ? things come up and sometimes we don’t have the time to make time sensitive tinctures. The reply from Dr. Jones was a great idea and wonderful advise.

Homestead InstructorOne of these days I’m going to take some tinctures at various stages of progression to a lab and get them analyzed to see what levels of extraction. I know a couple of chemists. I just need to get it done.

StudentI hope she fells better asap! I also loved the different ideas on what to do when you don’t have what you need on hand. I’m super curious about the different levels of extraction as well.

StudentI am in a tincture FB group that was discussing the benefits of and then tincturing lionsmane mushrooms. I am thinking about getting a kit to grow some and then tincture it. The process I’ve seen is to boil the mushrooms to get the fat soluable properties out, then do a tincture for the water soluble ones. I wonder about heat messing with the water properties-soluable properties. In a situation like this (I guess mushrooms specifically) would you recommend heat?

Homestead InstructorVodka will easily dissolve both water soluble and fat soluble chemicals. I’m not sure why you’d need to boil and then tincture. Seems odd to me.
