StudentI have a client with heavy metal poisoning from a hip replacement performed years ago. The hip was recently replaced and the offending metal removed. Is there an herb or combination of herbs that will assist in the detox of the heavy metals in her system?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorI’m not sure how you’d get heavy metals from a prosthetic hip. Was there a manufacturer’s recall on the appliance? What was going on that prompted the removal?
That said, there are some herbs that can help with heavy metals. We talk about it in the Herbal Cleanses lesson in the General Herbalism Section starting at slide #77. :0)
If someone had a heavy metal issue, I’d do a full regular cleanse as well.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentTopic AuthorI don’t know how it could happen either. She has been dealing with a progressive decline in health over the years since the hip replacement. Fatigue. brain fog, depression, increased pain throughout her body, blood pressure issues are some of the symptoms she has been dealing with. She finally found a doctor (after visiting many) who knew exactly what she was describing to him. Apparently, he has seen this in some of his other patients. She had hip surgery about a week ago and is a completely different person. She looks great can walk without pain. Is the happy person she used to be (according to her husband). She asked about herbs to help detox her system. I will pass along your suggestions. Thanks so much for your help.

StudentEven though I am responding to an old post, this is rather an important health issue. My friend was looking at a knee replacement, did a lot of research to make sure she knew what type of metal would be used, and made sure the doctor talked to the supplier to get accurate info. After all the research and fact checking, she had the knee replacement done. Shortly after the operation, she started having hives all over her body that got worse and worse. Were not controllable with antihistamines. There were other symptoms, too, but the allergy to the new hip joint was overwhelming. As it turned out, even though she got a certificate from the manufacturer stating what the metal was, and that there were no unsafe metals, it turned out there was nickel in the knee replacement. But she had to go through a second operation to replace that dangerous metal joint. The company who supplied that joint did pay, but honestly, nothing can repay you for the pain and suffering of a second operation. And I’m sure that company will source their products from more trustworthy manufacturers now. But that doesn’t help the poor people who might not know this kind of awful thing was possible. It cost my friend a lot of money up front to get to the truth, which many people wouldn’t be able to do. She did recover all that in the end, and more. After all that, she drank a lot of parsley tea. (She doesn’t like cilantro.) and used various tonic herbs to recover.
