StudentHi everyone, just getting my first post up. I have been loosly studing herbalism since I was a kid, I use to make herbal teas for sore throats and coughs for my family from wild herbs in the property. I am excited to get started fine tuning and applying more of what I have worked on, and becoming well rounded in knowledge of body system and how plants work. Growing up homesteading also means I have had to deal with medical emergancys in animals as well, (Goats, lots of goat issues) and I have never felt like I understood herbs and how to treat goats with them. And at the moment I am dealing with my first ever tooth infection. On antibiotics, And Calandula.. looks like I will be using up my supply of that. Any advice on tooth issues would be welcome.

StudentI’m sorry I don’t have advice for the tooth issues (I’m new here myself!), but I wanted to say welcome Cassie! My family raised and milked Nubians for about 7 years and I can so relate to your comment on goats. 🙂

StudentHi, and welcome! Yarrow root and ground cloves are also good at relieving dental pain, and they will also help with the infection. Add them to the calendula, and maybe your calendula will stretch a bit farther.
As an alternative, oak, chaparral, and gumweed are also excellent antibiotic herbs. I have combined tinctures of them together with garlic tincture to make an antiseptic mouthwash when I worry I might be getting a dental infection. Surprisingly, it also relieves the pain. But I start it right away, when the pain is only “annoying,” and not strong enough to reach for the ibuprofen bottle.

Homestead InstructorHi Cassie,
Have a look at the GI – Upper Digestive System lesson. Thats where we talk about dental infections and such. :0)
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
