StudentMy husband got into a lot of poison ivy a couple of weeks ago and had a pretty severe reaction on his wrists and hands. He’s changing jobs and didn’t want to look so gnarly going into a new workplace and shaking hands, so much to my chagrin and at the urging of others, he got the quick round of methylprednisolone to dry it up quickly. It’s six pills on day one, five on day two, four on day three, three on day four, two on day five, and one on day six. By about day three or four, his stomach was itching, but he figured it was just the poison ivy there. By day five, his trunk and most of his arms were fully covered in hives. He didn’t take the last two pills. He talked to a telehealth doctor, who said “it’s impossible” to have an allergic reaction to prednisone and told him it’s just poison ivy (it definitely is not) and to just wait it out. That’s not working. He has taken two Benadryl for two nights in a row, and he’s just still a miserable, sleepless, red hive-covered lobster. Any suggestions for how to undo this damage naturally? I’m just not sure if trying something like yucca could make it worse at this point.

Homestead InstructorHave a look at the Histamine formula. Some Liver Support and Liver builder would likely help as well.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you. I ordered the Histamine Formula, but of course I don’t have any of those herbs on hand. Giving him milk thistle/burdock to try to help the liver process in the meantime. He will be so grateful when it arrives. Many thanks again.

StudentThis sounds like what my mom is going through right now. She is starting a 3rd round of prednisone and has also had a shot. Her cheeks are swollen and upset from the prednisone and she now has cellulitis. I never thought about it being an allergic reaction to the prednisone. The ER doc told her that is just the poison Ivy traveling through her body causing the breakouts almost 3 weeks after her initial contact. Did your husband get better?

StudentWow! I feel so bad that prednisone is causing such bad reactions! Does anyone have a natural poison ivy treatment that they have tried that worked? I have heard that Jewel Weed works well for treating poison ivy on contact but if it isn’t available it would be nice to have a home remedy that works!
Thanks!

StudentSo this is taken from the Stinging Nettle monograph, but I would certainly try it as a treatment for poison ivy
“Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus) root has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve urticaria. Plantain (Plantago spp.) leaves draw harmful toxins from the skin and soothe inflammation. Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) leaf relieves the inflammation and itching associated with urticaria. Aloe vera gel is soothing and cooling, possessing osmotic actions that pull fluid and swelling from the rash. Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) sap has traditionally been used by native Americans to treat urticaria. Brigham Tea (Ephedra viridis) twig tea can be taken 2-3 times a day to lessen the immune response to nettle.”
