If a woman were to have a homebirth and hemorrhaged after delivery, what herbs would be safe to use to stop bleeding?

We often have used Yunnan Baiyao (obviously a Chinese herb).   Traditionally, shepherds purse and cottonroot.  It would be important to understand the reason for the bleeding—is it due to uterine atony (most likely cause) or is it a laceration of some type OR is it a clotting issue?   What is going on with the placenta?   I.e. there is a lot more to decision-making than just what herb to administer.

Yarrow and shepherd’s purse are favorites. But as Alana said, make sure the placenta is completely delivered. Also that there aren’t significant tears. A good midwife can manage placenta delivery and/or identify problems with the placenta delivery and can also manage minor tears. If herbs don’t shut down the bleeding right away, get to a doctor.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
