        Hi All.

I’m looking to get into growing some Echinacea, Rudbeckia hirta and/or Rudbeckia lanciata whichever works out best. My garden is in central ID, elev. about 3100 ft. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy Echninacea, Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan) or R. lanciata (Yellow Coneflower) seed.

The book I do a lot of work out of lists Echinacea angustifolia. Are there other species of Echincacea that work as well as angustifolia or are better suited for my location?

Any suggestions about garden growing the above plants is most welcome.

Thanks Doc Jones for mentioning the work-alike plants re: Echidacea.

        Thanks, Mouser 1

          Hi Mouser,

Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia and Rudbeckia hirta all grow well at my location near Twin Falls (not sure what our elevation is). The Echinaceas are sometimes tough to start from seed. Plant them in the fall so they have a good cold period.

You can almost always buy all three of these species at nurseries as plants as well.

Any of those species is good medicinally.

I had trouble with echinacea when I tried direct seeding in pots. I did not get any germination. It was a couple of years later (this year) that I decided to try again. I chose a different method this time and got nearly 100% germination WITH THE SAME SEED that I used before. I will be doing some more seed prep later next week and will do a more full write up and pictures.

Someone remind me if I forget….

Patrick, our elevation here is about 3000 feet as well.

I’ve used Steven’s method too and had really good success even with some tough plants. He’ll do a good write up.
