I just cleaned out my herb cupboard and I have some herbs that I bought in 2018/2019 (ex, peppermint leaf, burdock root, dandelion root, nettle leaf.) How do I know if they are still ok to use? Should I make tinctures out of them or start over with new dry herbs? Is there a shelf life on herbs? If they are less potent, can I just add more herb and less alcohol if I’m making tinctures? So many questions! Loving the new Homestead Academy site!

          Hi Christie,

Dry herbs have a shelf life of a year of two. If I were going to the trouble of tincturing, I’d use some newer material.

The herbs don’t go bad, they just lose some potency.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

What is the shelf life of a tincture? I know they have a long shelf life but do we know about how long?

Hi Emile, in regards to the life span of tinctures, Doc has mentioned that “We will expire before they do.”  😉   In my experience, however, I find my tinctures get used up before either one of us has time to expire, lol.
