Do herbalizers do basically the same thing as if I put an herb in a double boiler on low and let the smell and oils go up into the air?

Pretty much I think. It’s just vaporizing the essential oils. One of my early experiences with herbal medicine was having a little Peruvian lady stick my head over a simmering pot of herbs and put a towel over my head for a tent to concentrate the vapors.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
