StudentHello, I know this is probably a unique question, my friend asked me if you have any herbs that would help with Ebola? I did not have the answer and thought I’d ask you Doc Jones directly. I thought maybe the respiratory preparedness kit would work, especially since there is yarrow in it. Would that be correct? Thank you for your time, Joanne

Homestead InstructorI don’t see a lot of ebola. That said, I have a weird brain that sometimes remembers odd things it’s learned even if they don’t seem particularly useful.
There is a Chinese herb, han fang ji (Stephania tetrandra) which is used to dispel wind and dampness. So obviously, it would be good for ebola because ebola only attacks people with damp innards. OK, Chinese medicine is a bit…complicated.
In all seriousness though, Stephania tetrandra contains a chemical called tetrandrine which has had some really interesting research on preventing ebola viral attachment to cell membranes. Curcuminoids from turmeric have some anti-ebola effects too.
I’m working on a lesson that focuses specifically on which herbs do what to which viruses. It should be done in a month or two. I guess I’ll put ebola on the list in case anyone goes to Africa and smooches a monkey.
In the mean time, if any of you do go to Africa, don’t kiss any monkeys with damp or windy innards! :0)

StudentTopic AuthorHello Doc, hope you and your family are well. You said you were working on a lesson that “focuses specifically on which herbs do what to which viruses”. Have you completed that lesson? I am not sure where to find it. You posted this on a response to one of my questions in Dec 2022, quote #22137. Thank you, Joanne

Homestead InstructorHi Joanne,
I had a bit of an unexpected hiccup. I had unexpected brain surgery for fun to remove a benign meningioma. So January through April were a bit full of chaos. Though I did travel to do three events during that time…You know, because flying around and giving lectures is good rehab for that sort of thing. LOL The surgery went well and I’m back in the saddle and am working on all of those projects. The Virus lesson is under construction as we speak…type. :0)

StudentHello Doc Jones, I’m very interested in this topic as I found that same herb in my research. My progress was grounded at the study that found this herb most useful and Self Heal helpful for prevention. As I tried to get more info on it, I discovered that their are 2 “Fang Ji” herbs (Stephanie being one) and both look similar and have been used commercially. One had reports of Renal Failure after use as a wieght loss supplement. If you don’t have tested/safe herb, you could be using the counterfeit and cause harm. So, I am greatly interested in this new module. Thank you for offering it.

StudentTopic AuthorYou response is hilarious, I will let her know not to kiss any monkeys. But, it is really good to hear there is something that may help. Frankly, I am more excited about the new lecture we will be getting from you – on herbs for viruses, that sounds like terrific information to have. Can’t wait! Thank you again, Joanne

StudentJust another excited person for the herbs for which viruses – though ebola in general is not on my radar (and there is zero chance I’ll be kissing monkeys)! But I am really looking forward to that lesson!! I LOVE THIS COURSE!!

Homestead InstructorI’m doing one on specific bacteria too. I’m not sure whether it will all end up being one lesson or two.
I was going to start work on a breath-freshener formula for monkeys but have suddenly realized what a disaster that might have been! Glad we started this discussion so I had a chance to put the brakes on that idea before I caused another global pandemic.

StudentDoctor Jones, I heard you mention in one of your videos that you practiced veterinary medicine in Minnesota. Can I ask what area were you from?

Homestead InstructorI practiced in Spring Valley (where Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up) and in Preston.
I was there for about three years right out of vet school in the early 90s.
